Brilliant Career Lessons From David Bowie

Brilliant Career Lessons From David BowieBrilliant Career Lessons From David BowieDavid Bowie radiated style, passion and wisdom over the course of a career that spanned nearly half a century. Bowie reveled in his own truth and fearlessly cultivated his eccentricity. His example, in turn, emboldened scores of Bowies fans to take pride in their differences, because he made them feel understood, worthy and represented. In his work life, David Bowie mastered a host of artistic disciplines. A seasoned musician, writer, visual artist and actor, he seemed to have a compulsion to re-orchestrate reality, and present it in a new and stylish way, inviting audiences to see themselves and their world differently. David Bowie did so much mora than make us dance. These are some of the career lessons he left us. Live up to your abilityBowie welches making music right up until the final days of his life. His most recent album was released on his final birthday, January 8, 2016. Bowie had already pla nned a follow-up to the project and did a preliminary recording of five songs he hoped to include. Bowie clearly loved his work, and he continued to approach it with enthusiasm, even after he achieved the highest level of success. Michael Farrellbriefly toured with Bowie in 2003. Farrell, who at the time was the bandleader for Macy Grays band, was also part of the support band for Bowies A Reality Tour. Farrell saidAt that point, Bowie was almost 40 years into his career, and I was kind of expecting autopilot. Instead he was full of boundless enthusiasm about music. He was constantly challenging himself and his band with different songs, revised set lists, and new material. The shows were epic and full of power.Fearlessly evolve Bowie created his own genre of cool and its hard to imagine our world without his influence. Part of his identity as a songwriter, performer and artist was his perpetual inclination to grow and invent. Bowie was always evolving towards a new look, idea, way of creating or avenue for connecting with his audiences. Few performers are as enterprising, multidisciplinary or prolific as David Bowie. Bowie was quick to use technology to expand his reach for example, he was among the first artists to digitize his music. In the late 1990s he also started BowieNet, both an web service provider and an online community where his fans could interact, sometimes directly with Bowie who frequented the site under the name Sailor.Bowie was also an entrepreneur on Wall Street, and his Bowie Bonds gave him and his fellow performers a financial instrument to which they could tie their musical catalogues.Be good to your team Farrell said that Bowies affection for the band and crew was apparent, and that he personally checked in on them to make sure they felt taken care of. Farrell remembers Bowie the coworker as someone with a simple life and work philosophy that existed beneath the public persona that Bowie showed the world. Farrell said, Of course I will remember decades of musical brilliance, those are well documented and recorded. But I took away two simple things that even a rock star like Ziggy Stardust would not overlook Work hard and be kind.

How to Succeed at a Startup Company

How to Succeed at a Startup CompanyHow to Succeed at a Startup CompanyHow to Succeed at a StartupHeres what you need to know to succeed at a startup.Dreaming of helping to found the next Amazon or Uber? That will mean working for a startup. Working for a startup company can be an incredibly exciting and fulfilling experience, but for those coming straight out of corporate life, it can also require a serious change of perspective. Heres what you need to know to succeed at a startup and enjoy the experience to boot.Be realisticEveryone whos ever worked at a startup has probably fantasized about seeing their stock options climb sky high and turn them into instant millionaires at the IPO. However, its important to face facts most startups either never reach that IPO or end up as typical mid-level companies. The odds of catching the brass ring are pretty slim, so recognize the fantasy for what it is and focus on more achievable rewards.Expect to work (constantly)The biggest drawback to w orking for a startup is the difficulty of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Startups often cant afford to hire enough people to keep each job within the confines of a 40-hour workweek, which means youll probably be working at least one and a half jobs, depending on the amount of time you end up putting in. The good news is that technology has leapt to the rescue, with tools such as Slack making it much easier to work remotely or at odd hours of the day. You might be working 12- and 14-hour days for a while, but at least you can do some of it in your fuzzy pajamas and bunny slippers.Define your jobWhen you take a job at an established company, youre likely following in the footsteps of a dozen or more other employees who have cycled through that job already. Youll have a reasonably well-defined job description and will have a clear idea of your duties and their boundaries. At a startup, you may well be the very first person ever to hold the job you were hired for, so your job description is likely to be pretty fuzzy. While this can be difficult for employees who like firm boundaries, its also a huge opportunity for you to define your job and your responsibilities in a way that fits your own preferences perfectly.Embrace responsibilityBecause startups tend to have so few employees, each and every one of those employees is critical to the companys success. One slacker could single-handedly bring down the company. That means if youre going to work at a startup, you need to be prepared to roll up your sleeves and take charge of your job. Youll likely be the only person working on a given project, so its success or failure is entirely up to you. Expect to do a lot of self-management as well, because your boss will probably be too busy to spend a lot of time with you.The upside of this kind of environment is that not only do you get to own your successes and savor the resulting accomplishment, but you can also expect a meteoric rise within the company if you d o your job well.Accept the riskYouve no doubt heard the scary figures about how many businesses fail during their first year. When you work at a startup, you need to accept the possibility that the company youre working for could disintegrate suddenly and without warning. Thats a pretty scary possibility, but its the necessary counterbalance to the possibility that the startup could hit the jackpot and make you rich for life. In short, startups are a high-risk, high-reward kind of job. Be optimistic about the possibilities, but make sure you remember what you could be getting into.RelatedHow to Help Your New Business Survive Its First YearBe prepared for ups and downsSpeaking of risk, life at a startup tends to be chaotic, to say the least. You can expect some wildfleisch changes to take place in the company, your job, your benefits, and possibly your compensation package. For instance, if the startups funding starts to run dry, you may be asked to accept a temporary pay cut to help keep the company on its feet until more money turns up. Company perks like free lunches and insurance coverage can come and go depending on what resources are available at any given time. Even the nature of your job can change overnight based on what the company needs to be done at any particular moment. One of the biggest advantages startup companies hold in the marketplace is that they tend to be nimble, but that means youll need to be equally nimble to thrive in such an environment.Find your callingFor most startup employees, the long hours and sometimes crazy ups and downs are well worth it because theyre working on something they believe in passionately. If youre going to work at a startup, its crucial to pick one with a mission you care about. If you dont truly believe in the company, its products, and your role in its success, youll struggle to find a reason to invest the necessary time and energy. But as the saying goes, if you love your job, youll never work a day in your life.Click on the following link for more career advice.Ready to find the startup for you? Making Suturing Simpler

Making Suturing Simpler Making Suturing Simpler Making Suturing SimplerWorking on the eye can be sensitive business for doctors, right down to the suturing. And thats where an invention that started at the University of Iowa could make a difference.Wanting to work with existing technology, they hoped to deal with the delicate nature of sutures and the difficulties that arise when they are wet, making them hard to remove with forzeps, explains Alex Brown. Brown graduated with a degree in biomedical engineering from Iowa and is now pursuing a masters degree there in cellular engineering. There is a forceps and a cutting device and, to operate both of them, you have to use them individually. You have to put your tool down, bestattungs the other tool, refocus your lens, getting closer to the eye, Brown says. We wanted to integrate both of these tools together so that the ophthalmologist would be able to stay in one place and use the same movements rapidly over about a 45-second period and be able to remove all the sutures. But to make this into a product that could be viable when it comes to manufacturing was a clear challenge, says Jena Edwards, an undergraduate at the school majoring in biomedical engineering. We had the idea of what we wanted to do but then youre also talking about actually putting that into something that is producible and that is able to work on the scale of something that can be done in the eye without damaging the surrounding tissue, says Edwards.Alex Brown shows Iowa Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds his invention, which combines two surgical steps in one. Image Tom Jorgensen / The University of IowaIn the design for their teams ophthalmology suture extractor, theres a rivet between two peaks and that allows for the grabbing and cutting of suture leaves, explains Edwards. We wanted to go with the idea of using the forceps but having like a blade, says Brown. By pronation of your wrist, you were having a blade that is sticking out flush to the bottom face of a forceps or a tweezer.Brown believes this tool can lead to better accuracy but improve the psychological component as well. When youre talking about having a sharp object come to your eye, he says, Especially with kids, it can prolong the procedure because they have a knee-jerk reaction to move their head away and you constantly have to refocus and align. It could now possibly be easier for the patient and clinician as well.Theyre also considering using the invention for other applications such as ocular prostheses and are even looking into the effect it could have on surgeries in the cranial facial area.Another goal is to make a push for it to be used in other countries. Brown mentions his hope that it could possibly be used in a healthcare facility in India that the University of Iowa has ties with.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Learn about the latest trends in bioengineering at ASMEs Global Congress onNanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology. The Value of Satisfied Employees for your Company

The Value of Satisfied Employees for yur CompanyThe Value of Satisfied Employees for your CompanyThe Value of Satisfied Employees for your Company DeZubeEmployee satisfaction has been in the doldrums for years going back to 2013 and beyond. Recent research shows the continuation of this problematic trend67% of employees rank respectful treatment as a very important factor contributing to job satisfaction, according to the Society for Human Resource Managements (SHRM) 2016 Employee Satisfaction and Engagement survey.Only 31% of the workers that SHRM surveyed were very satisfied with the level of respect their organization showed employees.Workers who get respect from their leaders reported 89% greater job enjoyment and employee satisfaction and were 1.1 times more likely to remain with their organizations, according to a 2014 Harvard Business ReviewTony Schwartz study. The question is - how can employers address this issue? It turns out that the best way to improve your workers engag ement doesnt involve pay or benefits its about creating a workplace of respect. The bottom line pay and benefits might convince a job seeker to sign on with your organization, but respect will keep them in the game and at your table.Creating a workplace culture of respect for your growing business can also help you recruit new employees, says Rob Danna, senior vice president at global engagement solutions provider ITA Group in Des Moines, Iowa. Treat employees with respect and honor and theyll become brand advocates, he says. How do you promote respect and honor in your organization and then share that story when talking about your brand? These five tactics can help.1. Treat your employees the way they want to be treated.Respect is highly individual because we each interpret words and behavior differently. With that in mind, focus on treating employees the way they want to be treated, rather than how you personally want to be treated, says SHRM HR business partner Edward Yost SHRM-S CP.People may need additional kudos, feeling as though theyre listened to, their opinions are solicited or theyre included in meetings, he says.Find out what behaviors people consider respectful with an informal or formal employee survey. Then, create a focus group or ask your HR team to hammer out a written policy describing on-the-job behaviors that demonstrate respect and disrespect. Need ideas? The University of Virginia and the Law Society of Alberta share their respect policies online. If youre having trouble crafting a policy, a corporate attorney can likely help.2. Ask interview questions that highlight respect. Some argue that a respectful workplace starts with hiring respectful people.Peter Matthies, founder of the Conscious Business Institute (CBI) in Santa Barbara, California, which helps organizations become more effective, inspiring and sustainable, says his organization hires primarily on values.I dont mean the ones someone comes up with and sticks on the walls of the l obby, he quips. I mean the rules of the game - how we want to interact with each other, how we play together. We define those and hire to those rules of the game. One of the ways the CBI delves into respect is by asking job seekers open-ended questions like If you could choose your own work environment, how would you like to work? Followed by a question that shows respect for differences and individual preferences How can we help you create that here?Ashley Moore, a conflict entscheidung specialist at ProActive ReSolutions, a firm that works with organizations to build respectful workplaces, says a job candidates behavior during group interviews often provides clues about respectful behaviors.See how they defer when others are speaking, or if there is competition between them, she says. Look for people who share the spotlight or ask others what they think, even though theyre not the interviewer. For another temperament test come in 10 minutes late for the interview to see how the per son responds. Are they angry or do they shrug off the lateness? You could also ask behavioral questions such as Tell me about a time you were disrespected in the workplace. How did you handle it?3. Expose new hires to people who live your corporate values.Onboardingoffers another opportunity to highlight your organizations commitment to respect and honor employees. Business automation software developer Ontraport puts new hires through a two week class that includes meeting the companys Value Award Winners - folks who best exemplify the company values. Its a good way to have our values be tangible and easily understandable and not just aspirational or cheesy, says Talent Acquisition and Development Manager Sara Hetyonk. Its also a great way for new hires to meet people who have been here for three or four years and for them to get immediate interaction with the team.4. Teach people how to get along.A policy that calls for respect and honor wont change employee behavior. A survey of 8 ,000 employees by ProActive Resolutions found69% of respondents know about their organizations respectful workplace policies.58% said their employer didnt provide training about how to respond to disrespect.32% were aware of two to five instances of disrespectful behavior at work.Sending a few people to mediation and facilitated discussion training ensures you have in-house folks who can provide supportive resources to address disrespect in a constructive way. That exists in even smaller organizations, Moore says.5. Treat employees like the stars they are. When an employee or team does something great, like working extra hours to land a new client, make sure everyone knows about it by sharing the story, Danna says. Create a 90-second video about the teams extraordinary effort and posting it on your company website. Every employee with their face in that video will repost it, Danna promises.Even small gestures can be meaningful. Print notecards with one side blank and the other featur ing the company brand and mission. Ask managers and co-workers to use the notecards to write handwritten thank-yous and words of praise to share with people they respect.Even unterstellung sort of small gestures will go a long way to establish a workplace of respect - and a culture of fairness and equity.

With such intense competition, its vital to differentiate yourself by understanding what your strengths and weaknesses are and what you bring to the table.TipMake a list of your weaknesses and strengths in your given industry. Try to position these in terms of the types of jobs for which you will be applying. Once youve been able to identify all of them, you can position your strengths throughout yourresume, cover letter, and in conversations with potential employers. Define Your Place In The MarketIts not enough to just know you want a job you need to understand the type of job youre looking for, the job youre actually qualified for, and why you would be a good for it.You should also take this time to determine whats truly important to you in your job. This means laying out desired salary and benefits, as well as other forms of compensation, such as flex time, remote work, travel, etc. Youll use this throughout your job search process, including looking for jobs and negotiating terms in a job offer, so have it readily available.TipDraft a positioning statement, or yourelevator pitch, that youll use for interviews and in networking situations. It should be no longer than two sentences in length. Your statement should be a high-impact, all-encompassing summary of who you are, what you do, why you do it, and some of the impressive results youve delivered.Identify Your TacticsFigure out what resources you have at your disposal and what tactics you need to use to succeed with your marketing plan. Consider the followingYour connectionsWho do you know online and offline that could connect you with the right person? Utilize your networks by reaching out to these individuals to let them know you are actively looking. This will put you top of mind for them for when an opportunity does come up.Job postings your network sharesBy finding opportunities within your networking circle, you are increasing your chances at getting hired- according to aJobvite survey, 64 percent of recruiters rate referrals as the highest quality source.Your cover letter and resumeBuild a template for each item that can be adjusted as necessary for different positions. Your cover letter should include part of your elevator pitch your resume template should have measurable outcomes from previous positions. Both pieces of material should also highlight the strengths you identified. But remember, no two jobs are alike, so your resume and cover letters should reflect that.Stay Flexible and Up-To-DateOrganize your business plan in an easy-to-manage format that allows you to define and fine-tune your strategy as your job search progresses. Just like a business plan, outside influences will require changes to your strategy, so stay flexible to account for those.TipStay up-to-date on news within your industry. Consider additional investment in your personal marketing plan by attending trainings on certain skills, joining networking organizations, attending industry-wide events or volunteering for local groups. This can be a very powerful way to make new connections and ultimately land a job.Finding a job is your job. By taking the time upfront to define your personal marketing plan, you will not only come off as much more professional and prepared in any situation youre confronted with, but you will also uncover your true value and potential. What do you think? Are there other elements you would include in your personal marketing plan? Dos and Donts for Exit Interviews

Dos and Don’ts for Exit Interviews Dos and Don’ts for Exit Interviews When you leave a job, it’s common for the human resources department to reach out to you and set up an exit interview. During this conversation, you’ll be asked why you’re leaving the company and for overall feedback on the organization.   Why Employers Set Up Exit Interviews For companies, knowing why people choose to leave is tremendously helpful. If, for instance, an exiting employee says there’s no room for growth, the company might adjust its organizational structure. Plus, people may be more honest in their feedback than they would in a year-end review. (However, while your employer may want your honest opinion, you shouldn’t use an exit interview as an opportunity to unload a pile of grievances. See more on that below.) What to Expect at an Exit Interview The format of an exit interview varies from company to company. You might fill out a written survey, have a face-to-face meeting or experience a combination of the two. Typically, someone from human resources will conduct the interview. Your direct manager might also meet with you- perhaps in a more informal setting, like a goodbye lunch- to dig into your motivation for leaving. Tip: Expect questions focused on your experience at the company, including both high and low points, as well as on the reasons behind your departure. Expect questions focused on your experience at the company, including both high and low points, as well as on the reasons behind your departure. What to Say During Your Exit Interview As in any interview setting, do not lie during your exit interview. However, you may want to carefully word your responses so you do not burn any bridges. The world of work can be small, and you never know when you’ll encounter a former colleague in a new job. (If you’re very critical in your exit interview, word can potentially spread from HR to other employees.) Also, it is difficult to request a reference once you’ve burned a bridge. Dos and Don’ts for Exit Interviews Here are more dos and don’ts to follow during your exit interview. DO: Act professionally. Just like in any other interview, behave professionally in your exit interview. That doesn’t mean you can’t be critical or offer feedback on areas that need work- but avoid being nasty. And as much as possible, be positive- even if you weren’t fond of the job, coworkers or company vibe. If you can, try to give at least one compliment during the conversation. DON’T: Complain, vent or be rude. Think of this as the flipside to the “Do: act professionally” advice. Your exit interview is not an appropriate time to complain about coworkers, a manager or assignments. Above all, be polite- it’s fine to voice a critique, so long as it’s politely worded. Basically, don’t be mean or hurtful. DO: Share specific and helpful information. Was there a problem or situation that precipitated your job hunt and eventual departure? That’s something you can mention. If you do, keep it factual- focus on what happened as opposed to how you felt, and share specific examples. And, do your best to be a problem-solver, suggesting solutions where appropriate. That way, you’ll sound constructive and not like a complainer. DO: Plan what you’ll say. You want to be honest in this conversation, but you also don’t want to say anything that will leave your interviewer with a bad impression. Practicing what you’ll say, before the interview, ensures you don’t misspeak or phrase a response poorly. Take a look at a list of common exit interview questions. DON’T: Boast about your new job. That falls under the category of not being rude. You can talk about some of the positive aspects of the new position- obviously, you’re leaving for a reason, right? But don’t go overboard. It’s common for interviewers to ask why you’re leaving. If you do, you can highlight a positive aspect of the new role- increased pay, greater opportunities, a higher title, etc. Just keep it simple.   DON’T: Be petty. Stolen lunch? Annoying, nail-clipping colleague? These may be some of the reasons for your departure from the company, but those probably don’t qualify as meaningful information HR wants from the interview. And it makes you look unprofessional. So, keep feedback substantive, not small.

Apply and Network in One Step

Apply and Network in One Step Apply and Network in One Step The next generation of job application software will let you see whom you already know at the company, so you can apply for a job and network at the same time. That’s the latest feature from one of the leading automatic online job application software packages, SilkRoad Technology’s OpenHire. Thanks to a software update SilkRoad introduced last spring that is being adopted by many HR departments, once you’ve submitted your resume to a job site using OpenHire 5.0, you’ll be able to view potential connections between the organization and your existing professional network.OpenHire5.0 connects to your LinkedIn account to show you who in your network may be connected to someone at the organization; that lets you follow up your job application with an e-mail to a colleague to request a referral or set up an introduction to someone who can.Referrals matter, even in the world of automated Applicant Tracking Systems like SilkRoad. Studies have shown that more than 60 percent of jobs a re filled through referrals. Employers fast-track job candidates who are recommended by current employees; statistically speaking, employee-referred hires prove to be better hires, have longer job tenures and therefore represent a far sounder investment on the part of employers, according to Thomas Boyle, SilkRoad director of product strategy.ATS programs that connect to your social networks will be more common as businesses look for more efficient ways to pre-screen candidates, writes Jim Holincheck, managing vice president at Gartner Research and a human resources software analyst, in a blog post. The employee referral and a direct connection are among the strongest screening tools available, said Lisa Rowan, program director of HR, Learning and Talent Strategies for Framingham, Mass.-based analyst firm IDC. “If I’m an employee, I’m not going to recommend poor candidates, generally,” she said. Most ATSes are sophisticated enough to know this. If an ATS has ranked Candidate A as being 80 percent qualified for a given job requisition, a source note that flags that candidate as also being an employee referral will raise that candidate’s ranking.Job seekers will find themselves applying via OpenHire if they look for jobs at companies including Urban Outfitters, food and agriculture giant The J.R. Simplot Co. or Hillel, the world’s largest organization of on-campus Jewish groups. A long list of companies with familiar names use SilkRoad’s other products, including Boston University, the Washington Post, United Way, Benjamin Moore Paints, Crate Barrel and Sony Pictures. In a nutshell, there’s a good chance job seekers will cross paths with SilkRoad on the job search.Share, ’cause that’s fairBeyond easing the path for candidates to identify connections within an organization, OpenHire encourages job seekers to use the other end of networking to help others find jobs with a single click. The “Share” part of the new “Apply. Connect. Share.” feature helps candidates do what they’re already doing: Pass along job listings to friends.“Ninety-nine percent of sites allow job seekers to e-mail a listing to a friend,” Boyle said. “But we also realize that social media is growing 10 percent faster than e-mail. If you think they’ll only share jobs through e-mail, you’re limiting how they’ll be shared and you’re limiting the likelihood they’ll be shared.”If you land at an OpenHire site and cruise the job listings, you might see a position that wasn’t perfect for you but might be a perfect fit for a friend. With two clicks, you’ll now be able to post that opening directly on Facebook, for example, or any of some 320 social-media venues SilkRoad supports. Beyond the typical suspects such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, that list includes a mind-boggling array of bookmarking sites and blog sites. And the practice will help you in the long run; after all, the most powerful way to acquire job leads and refer rals is not to ask for them but to help others and wait for them to return the favor. In other words, apply. To bolster your chances of getting an interview, connect. To make sure the right jobs get to the right people and they potentially return the favor, share, share, share away.CORRECTION: Chipotle Mexican Grill is not a customer of SilkRoad technology’s OpenHire software. A previous version of this story incorrectly included Chipotle in a list of OpenHire customers.

What I Learned From Quitting My Job With No Plan - The Muse

What I Learned From Quitting My Job With No Plan - The Muse What I Learned From Quitting My Job With No Plan I sat fidgeting in an uncomfortable chair that was placed adjacent to my boss’ expansive desk, feeling the sweat already start to tickle my forehead. I kept picking at a piece of torn upholstery toward the bottom of the seat, despite my best attempts to look cool, calm, and collected. But, no matter how many articles I crank out about successfully putting in your two weeks notice, I’ll admit it’s pretty tough to look confident and composed when you’re quitting your job. That’s exactly what I was doing. I was seated across from a man who had been my manager for years- starting when I was just a college intern to when the company took me on full-time- and explaining to him that I was hitting the road. “So, I guess you could consider this my two weeks’ notice,” I said to him while doing my best to avoid any direct eye contact. “Oh, here, I put it in writing too, in case you need that or, like, something,” I added while practically throwing him an unsealed envelope and simultaneously trying to edge my way out of the room. “Well, this is a surprise,” he said, with a forced smile on his face. “Where are you going? Did you receive a better offer elsewhere?” I swallowed nervously, took a deep breath, and attempted to keep my voice from trembling. “No, not exactly,” I replied, trying to stifle the nauseous feeling that was slowly rising from my stomach to my throat. “So, why are you leaving?” he pressed, “Where are you going?” “I want to be a freelance writer. I’m going to do that full-time,” I quickly responded. His face said it all. Like so many others, he was confused as to why I would leave the comfort and security of a traditional, full-time job (and, hello, health benefits!) for a life of uncertainty as a freelancer. I wanted to explain to him that this was something I just had to do. I’d been thinking about it for ages, and I could no longer tolerate it being only that- a thought. I needed to take action and give it a try. But, in reality, I didn’t say any of that. Instead, I kept my mouth shut. Why? Well, the truth of the matter was I didn’t really have a plan that I could share with him. Sure, I had one big client that I was hoping would carry me until I could get things off the ground (that client actually ended up dropping me only a few months later, but that’s a story for another time). But beyond that, I didn’t have any other potential opportunities lined up. I lived in a small town with very few connections to the type of work I wanted to be doing. I really had no idea how I was going to go about running my own freelance business. Oh, and I had absolutely zero clue how I was going to pay those pesky things called bills. As someone who loves security and predictability, to this day I have no idea what came over me. But, regardless of the fact that I didn’t really know what was coming next, I quit my job anyway. Looking back, jumping ship from my full-time position with no firm back-up plan in place probably wasn’t the smartest thing. And, I’m definitely not trying to encourage you to march into your own boss’ office tomorrow and use that exact same tactic- unless you’re prepared for a lot of shameless crying into an open carton of those delicious (and somewhat addicting) frosted animal crackers. However, I do think taking that terrifying leap of faith was one of the most enlightening career experiences I’ve had so far. Call it stupid, impulsive, or brave- at the very least, it was educational. Here are a few of the (many, many, many) things I learned. 1. You Don’t Need the Approval of Others When I would tell people about my plan to sprint away from my cubicle in favor of the freelance life, I so desperately wanted them to reassure me with statements like, “Oh wow, you’re so brave!” “Good for you!” or even a friendly and dad-like, “Go get ’em, tiger!” Unfortunately, that’s not really what I got. Instead, I was faced with a lot of, “Wait, you’re doing what?” types of comments. In the end, it really didn’t matter. I was the only one who needed to feel good about my decision. And I did- at least in between the animal cracker crying sessions mentioned earlier. Yes, we all naturally crave approval and reassurance from others every now and then. But, trust me, you don’t need it- at least not as much as you think you do. 2. Scary Is Exciting There’s a reason that people fork over wads of cash in order to see a horror film about possessed grandparents or to walk through a haunted house where someone is guaranteed to leap out with a chainsaw. There’s a big part of being terrified that makes you want to run and cry- but the other piece is actually somewhat thrilling. In the first few days (ahem, alright, months) after leaving my full-time gig, I’d sit down at my computer and feel totally overwhelmed. Every day was a battle to try to scrounge up work and at least take one step in the right direction. But, at the same time, I felt absolutely exhilarated. I had no idea what was coming next, and that actually made me feel surprisingly motivated and optimistic. It was one of the most distressing, nauseating, and anxiety-inducing times in my life- but it was also the most exciting. 3. You Never Know Until You Try I hate to sound like a cheesy, cliché high school commencement speech. But, this sentiment really does ring true. You have no idea what you’re capable of until you push yourself to try it. I’ll be honest- it’s not that I strongly disliked my full-time job. However, it didn’t set my heart on fire either. A big chunk of my duties were administrative. And, while I did perfect the art of mail merging like a total boss, I didn’t really feel all that challenged or fulfilled by my work. However, as a self-described creature of habit, I think that I likely could’ve dealt with that mundaneness for the rest of my life. There was a big part of me that figured I was suited for that sort of life and career. It was safe and predictable. I was content. Fast forward to now, and I’ve accomplished things that I never even thought were a possibility for me. I’ve been published places that I assumed were mere pipe dreams. I’ve worked with people who are essentially celebrities in my eyes. Just think- none of it would’ve happened if I had stayed with the “safe” route. 4. Your Career Really Doesn’t Define You We all have the tendency to use our careers to define ourselves. But, it’s important to remember that your job isn’t who you are- it’s what you do. As Muse Managing Editor Jenni Maier explained in her article about being laid off, your position definitely adds to your life, but it doesn’t make up the entirety of it. When I left my job, I felt the need to justify my decision and clarify every last detail until people were literally snoring in front of me. There was this immense need to explain my employment situation in order to give myself a purpose and identity. Turns out, that’s really not the case- all of that pressure to define myself using my career was totally self-imposed. In fact, most people honestly didn’t care if I was a dog walker or the Dalai Lama. Although, above anything else, they were most likely just wondering why I gave them a play-by-play career breakdown when all they asked was, “Paper or plastic?” Jumping ship from my full-time job was undoubtedly one of the scariest career decisions I’ve made in my life thus far. But, even though it had my knees shaking and my palms sweating, I’m glad I did it. It’s worked out well so far, and I’ve managed to learn a lot along the way. So, if you’re contemplating taking your own leap of faith anytime soon, I hope these lessons encourage you and help you see the light at the end of the tunnel. And, in those moments when all you feel is sheer panic? Well, reach out to me on Twitter. I’ll come running- frosted animal crackers in tow.

Digital Tolerance

Digital Tolerance Digital Tolerance Digital Tolerance Recently, Boeing began using model-based definition (MBD) to see if it could improve productivity and reduce time to market. MBD is a method of annotating computer-aided design models with geometric and tolerancing information that allows engineers to draw directly onto a 3-D model. It shows promise for improving and accelerating design, manufacturing, and inspection processes. A group of researchers from École Polytechnique Montréal and the University of Quebec École de Technologie Supérieure set out to investigate the feasibility of MBDs one day taking the place of 2-D engineering drawings used throughout industry today. Traditional engineering drawings are still essential for capturing and distributing non-geometric information at most companies today, notes Louis Rivest, research leader. He stressed they are looking at the feasibility of eliminating the 2-D drawings, not eliminating paper itself. From ASME Y14.41: figures illustrate (from top) a solid modelwith all annotation displayed, with one type of annotation displayed, and with selected annotation displayed.Members of industry approached the team to find out whether MBD was ready for prime time, whther it could benefit industry by speeding product development and time to market, and the feasibility of a large-scale move across the engineering profession to model-based definition. Based on Standards For a long time, the industry has been moving toward tolerancing solid models rather than two-dimensional models. MBD has been rooted in the 2003 ASME Standard Y14.41-2003 Digital Product Definition Data Practices, which sets requirements for CAD software developers to follow for tolerances, dimensional data, and other digital design annotations on 3-D solid models. Tolerancing is showing dimensions and tolerances on a model. Prior to this standard, nothing in the industry dealt with displaying tolerancing on 3-D models, mentions Alex Krulikowski, chairman of the Committee on Solid Model Tolerancing that helped spearhead the standard. The standard addresses the depiction of tolerances in model-viewing mode: rotating the model rotates the tolerances with it. It also ensures that engineers and manufacturers are communicating tolerancing in an accepted way, so a user knows how to find them on a drawing, how to interpret them and read them, Krulikowski explained. Unique Implementation With the tolerancing standard in effect, the researchers interviewed 34 representatives from two major Canadian aerospace manufacturing companies and found that the move away from 2-D drawings is feasible for most industries, though it faces some barriers that could be addressed through simple technology changes. How actual engineering, manufacturing, and inspection processes would need to be redesigned if MBD, rather than 2-D drawings, were to be used depends on the adopting industry. Releasing the engineering drawing is a process; each company has thousands of processes defined. We couldnt address them all. We concentrated on what would need to be done to make the best use of MBD data and get rid of engineering drawings. Rivest said. Digital Product Definition Data Practices specifies the form for entering queries ... as in these examples, for a question of size tolerance (above) and geometric tolerance (below).Ensuring long-term storage and appropriate archiving of 3-D models that include dimensioning and tolerancing information, given the speed at which CAD systems change and the consistent incompatibility among systems, is being investigated separately. Simplified Viewing Industry-wide, when 3-D models replace engineering drawings, downstream users who currently rely on these drawings would need another method for communicating product dimensioning and tolerancing data. Many non-engineer users have no access to or familiarity with CAD; a lightweight format is needed to communicate this information, said researcher Virgilio Quintana. Viewer programs convert MBD data from different CAD applications to lightweight format files, containing the model along with dimensions, tolerances, annotations, management information, and revision history. These files could be readily opened, read, and understood by users without CAD experience, he explained. Inspection Aid According to Rivest, inspection processes would be quicker and potentially even more accurate by adopting the MBD format. Time savings would occur by minimizing operator inputs required during programming and running coordinate measurement machine inspections since model-based software would compare parts against tolerances contained within the CAD model itself rather than from engineering drawings whose tolerances traditionally had to be derived from 3-D data. The accuracy and integrity of the inspection process would be improved by the softwares ability to check contour and hold positions as well as constraints, such as flatness, concentricity, and angularity. Model-based software also enables automated inspection routines, which ensures parts are inspected in the same way, in the same places, and with the correct tolerances every time, wrote Rivest, Quintana, and others in Computers in Industry (March 2010). A Matter of Trust Overall, the Canadian researchers found evidence that moving away from 2-D drawings is now feasible for most industries, and does offer real benefits. Some barriers could be addressed with simple technology, but some are cultural and difficult to change. People still arent fully convinced about MBD, Quintana said. Its hard for them to trust an electronic file versus a printed 2-D drawing kept in a safe place. Still, they may have to justify making the changes sooner rather than later to supply or compete with bigger companies who are early adopters. [Adaptedfrom Digital Tolerance, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, July 2010.] Releasing the engineering drawing is a process; each company has thousands of processes defined.Louis Rivest, research leader.

Robots Use Environmental Clues to Build Structures

Robots Use Environmental Clues to Build Structures Robots Use Environmental Clues to Build Structures Robots Use Environmental Clues to Build Structures Beavers are widely known for their engineering ingenuity in building dams and water-protected lodges. Now researchers at the University at Buffalo have built a robot that mimics the way beavers draw cues from the surrounding environment to build structures. The idea is to make robots that can build on-the-fly structures by understanding undefined environments, as opposed to building structures based on pre-defined plans. With the help of an algorithm and sensory input, the robot determines the kind of structure to make and the best way to construct it. To make robots able to navigate unpredictable complex spaces, researchers turn to stigmergy, a biological phenomenon of indirect coordination of multiple animals working on the same project. Image: University at Buffalo It is currently very difficult for robots to operate reliably in cluttered, unstructured environments. This robot is designed to address the problem of mobility in such situations like disaster areas or remote areas, said Nils Napp, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University at Buffalo. For You: Sensors Allow Robots to Feel Sensation The ability to adapt flexibly to challenging environments is important for robots that are intended to work in the field, such as helping rescuers in disaster areas. The robot built by Napps team has an external 3-D camera to evaluate surroundings, map the terrain, and collect metrics like height of an object. It also has an arm to pick up and deposit items. Future versions of the robot will have all the sensors on board, Napp said. This robot is designed to address the problem of mobility in such situations like disaster areas or remote areas. Prof. Nils Napp, University at Buffalo. The researchers used debris from an earthquake testing facility and natural rocks in test scenarios for the robot. The robot does not work with actual rocks and real-world clutter, but the goal is to get a degree of understanding on how the robot would scale to a human-sized system. The building material is compliant bags, Napp said. We use them because they conform to the environment so we can use them over pretty cluttered areas. The ultimate goal is to develop teams of robots that can work together autonomously and interact with the environment in real time to build structures in places that are otherwise inaccessible to human workers. How to Write a Resignation Letter

How to Write a Resignation Letter How to Write a Resignation Letter How to Write a Resignation Letter If you're changing jobs, you're going to have to write a resignation letter. Here's how to do so without burning bridges. [TWEET] Most professionals want to move up the corporate ladder and expand their careers, which often means changing companies and saying goodbye to current colleagues and employers. But how do you say goodbye without burning bridges? Simplicity is the most effective method when determining how to write a resignation. It should be professional, curious, and, most importantly, direct to the point. How NOT to write a resignation letter So you've found the perfect job and now want to say goodbye to your current employer. First thing's first, do not spill, or even imply, your feelings on paper. This not only is unprofessional; it may hurt your future endeavors. Let's begin with how not to write an effective resignation letter. Here is an example of a truly pitiful goodbye letter: Mrs. Sanders: I quit. I've had enough. You owe me $3,000 for unused vacation and sick days. Larry While this team member may feel that their time at the organization was a living hell, this is not the time to say it. Instead, a letter should convey the positive time spent with the organization. However, what do you do If you feel that none of the time was positive? Write a quick, direct and to the point letter informing the boss of your departure. How to write a resignation letter A truly expert resignation letter is one that sets you up to leverage your former position and colleagues' esteem in your future path, whether it's for networking or solid references. In other words, don't burn bridges you may need in the future. The first paragraph should focus on the subject at hand leaving the organization. The letter's tone should be professional and direct. Open with the fact you are leaving, and include the date and reason for departure. If you are resigning for less than positive reasons, do not include the reason in your letter. Here is an example of the introduction paragraph: Dear Mrs. Sanders: This letter is to inform you I am resigning my position as Team Leader effective December 2, 2016. After five years successfully leading a fine group of fresh minds and dedicated team members, I have found another position that will help further my career and advance my skills. The second paragraph should focus on your time with the company. This is where you butter them up. Here is an example of the second paragraph: During my tenure with your company, all team members went out of their way to make me feel welcome. The dedication to teamwork and a true family environment will stay with me no matter my next adventure. Thank you for allowing me to play an integral part in your company. Finally close with an invitation to contact you if they need more information. And ask if you can use them in the future as a reference. Make it clear though that you are not seeking a counteroffer and your decision is firm. Be timely Your employer will not appreciate a last minute resignation. Make sure you send your resignation letter in a timely fashion. This not only is courteous, but it shows your dedication to professionalism and opens up chances for future possibilities. While experts disagree on what is an appropriate timeframe to give a resignation letter, the common thought is 30 to 45 days prior to your departure. The minimum requirement at most companies is at least a two-week notice before leaving. When selecting a timeframe, remember the company needs enough notice to seek a new team member to fill your position, and other paperwork needs to be completed before you leave. Additionally, you should tidy up your workload before departing. Takeaways Leaving a work environment can leave mixed feelings for colleagues, employers, and the team member who is resigning. The process for determining how to write a resignation letter, however, can be simplified by maintaining your professional courtesy and remembering there are real people behind those titles and nameplates. Use the Golden Rule as your guiding point. Let TopResume help you write the next chapter of your career. Here's how.

How to Update Your Resume for the Modern Job Hunt

How to Update Your Resume for the Modern Job Hunt How to Update Your Resume for the Modern Job Hunt The Modern Resume: Not Your Mother̢۪s Resume Times have changed. Today's resume is not the same as your mother̢۪s. With Mother's Day coming up, you're probably thinking a lot about the woman who raised you. Whether she was a strong career woman who inspired you to go after your professional dreams or a nurturing stay-at-home mom who invested her time at home raising you, she taught you how to be the person you are today. Still, as great as Mom is, kids will be kids and inevitably view her as outdated in some regards, such as her questionable understanding of social media or recent fashion trends. When it comes to your career, for example, you wouldn't want to wear her outfit from decades ago into an interview. The same goes for your resume because that ever-so-important document has changed over time. Here are the components of a modern resume template, plus how to dress it up properly for the times from head to toe. Header Mom's resume: Your mom's resume probably had her name at the top along with her street address and home phone number. Depending on her age it may have included things like her birthdate or age, marital status, religion, and health. Your resume: Now, employers are looking for completely different information. Your name, city and town (no street address needed), cell phone number, email, and a link to your online portfolio, Linkedin account, or personal webpage are what should populate your header. Introduction Mom's resume: On Mom's resume, you'd likely find a heading called the Objective. This is where she would talk about her career goals. However, the resume objective statement has gone the way of bell bottoms and is not likely to make a comeback. Your resume: If you're tight on space (remember to keep it to one page if you're just out of school and two pages if you're a seasoned pro), you don't need anything here. Your cover letter could do the trick. However, a professional summary that highlights your best skills and biggest accomplishments is a great way to catch the eye of an employer who's skimming your resume quickly. Remember, it's not just about you it's about what you can bring to their company. Related: It's Time to Ditch Your Resume Objective Statement Education Mom's resume: Of course, Mom put all of her education on her resume. She even included graduation dates, GPAs, and maybe even major test scores. Your resume: Unlike Mom, keep it simple on a modern resume. Add the name and location of your high school and any college you have along with the degrees earned no dates. Even though employers aren't legally allowed to discriminate against age, why give it away? Work history Mom's resume: Mom is a very thorough woman and probably listed every job she ever had, no matter how small, and then went into detail about all of the things she did at each position. She used a lot of great words like punctual, diligent, and reliable in there too. Your resume: List only your jobs over the last 10-15 years, and keep it short and to the point. Use bullet points to highlight your accomplishments not what you did all day, but what you actually accomplished for that company. Keep in mind that human readers like active verbs that relate to the job, while applicant tracking systems are tuned into keywords. Look at the job posting to get an idea of what words will jump out at them. Also, make sure the formatting of your modern resume template is clean, consistent, and professional. References Mom's resume: What better way to close out your resume than with some great people who will vouch for you listed as your references? Mom probably listed out three to five references or, if she was short on space, put References Available Upon Request. Your resume: Space is at a premium on your resume and it's a little early in the game to be worrying about references. As for the upon request line, that's a given. There's no need to state it. However, you do want to carefully choose great references and keep them handy for when they are needed. On Mother's Day, get Mom a gift, give her a hug, and make sure she knows just how much she's inspired and taught you. But, just like you probably aren't sporting the same hairdo she had back in the day, don't let your resume make you look outdated Mom would agree. Click on the following link for more resume advice. Keeping Trade Secrets Safe 8 Tips to Thwart Loose Lips

Keeping Trade Secrets Safe 8 Tips to Thwart Loose Lips Keeping Trade Secrets Safe 8 Tips to Thwart Loose Lips Employee turnover is a fact of life, especially during protracted economic slumps like the current one. Whatever their reason for leaving, departing employees often take valuable experience and company knowledge with them when they go. Its tough enough losing a well-trained engineer, but losing a closely guarded trade secret to the competition can be far worse. Fortunately, you can take some steps to minimize your risk. Below are eight things you should know or steps you can take to help plug intellectual property leaks. 1. Know the Law Federal and state laws protect trade secrets, and many states laws conform to the standards of the Uniform Trade Secrets Act. But be sure to learn the laws that apply to your business and your state. The federal government can impose criminal penalties on people who steal trade secrets for economic gain and knowingly harm the original secret owner. Most states allow a company to sue if it believes valuable secrets have been improperly disclosed, and winning parties may obtain significant civil payouts. In addition to federal and state laws, courts may also consider other factors in deciding if a trade secret has been violated, including how well known the information is both within and outside your business, the value of the information, the degree of difficulty to duplicate the secret, and the steps youve taken to safeguard it. 2. Classify Your Information Catalog your trade secrets and sensitive material in a central register or secure computer database. It may also be useful to consider classifying trade secrets based on their value and sensitivity. Specific classificationstop-secret, ultra-strict security, or for internal eyes only make it clear who is and is not allowed access to certain information. At Krispy Kreme, for instance, only key employees may know the ingredients of the doughnut glaze while the ingredients of the doughnuts may be more commonly known among employees. 3. Disclose Less Information Statistically speaking, the more people who know a trade secret, the more likely it is to be disclosed. Even high-level associates like business managers, senior officers, or board members may not always need to know every piece of intellectual property. Some companies compartmentalize different aspects of the trade secret so that only a few key employees know how all the pieces fit together. 4. Get Signed Agreements Individual secrecy and non-compete agreements make key employees personally liable for unauthorized disclosures. Requiring such an agreement can remind employees of the continuing need to keep sensitive information secret. But when it comes to enforcement, many judges will weigh a claim against an employees right to earn a living based on industry knowledge and experience. The most effective secrecy agreements take this into account. 5. Keep Good House Companies must regularly review their trade secret portfolio to remove or reclassify outdated items. Keep key employees who signed secrecy agreements up to date on a trade secrets status and any recent legal action taken to protect it. Its a great way reinforce the seriousness of maintaining secrecy. 6. Educate Your Employees If employees know the importance of maintaining secret informationand the consequences of leaking ittheyll be more likely to guard your trade secrets. Build a corporate culture of diligence through periodic educational programs on confidentiality. 7. Conduct Exit Interviews Use the exit interview to remind departing employees of their ongoing obligation to keep company secrets. Remind employees of the possible consequences of violating secrecy agreements. Consider asking them to sign a written affirmation of your policies. 8. Monitor Your Competitors Web sites, trade shows and white papers are good ways to keep an eye on your competitors activities in a period of high turnover. If a competitor recruits several of your top engineers in a short time frame, you may have cause for alarmespecially if the competitors new products bear more than a coincidental resemblance to your own recent releases. [Adapted from Keeping Secrets, by Daniel Staley, Fennemore Craig, P.C., for Mechanical Engineering, August 2010.] If employees know the importance of maintaining secret information and the consequences of leaking it theyll be more likely to guard your trade secrets.
